New Year’s Resolutions #1: Move Well and Move Often

As we approach the end of 2017 and begin planning health and wellness goals or “resolutions” for the new year, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. What is health and what is the best way to reach your new goals? Health is defined as “the level of functional and metabolic efficiency of a living organism.” According to the World Health Organization (WHO) it is a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”Both of these statements are true because in order to be in this state of physical, mental, and social well-being, our body need to be functioning properly and moving correctly. Once our body is functioning properly and moving correctly, then we are able to reach our goals more efficiently and effectively. This is where Chiropractic comes into play. As Chiropractors, we are movement specialists. There are 2 main steps that we focus on.

Step 1: Assessment and Evaluation

The first component and main focus of our evaluation is movement. We do this through very specific assessments using FMS (Functional Movement Systems) and Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). FMS and SFMA are ranking and grading systems which consists of various movement tests that requires a balance of mobility and stability of the body. Professional and Olympic athletes utilize these grading systems to identify and correct dysfunctional movement to prevent future injuries and improve performance. These unique assessments allow us to differentiate dysfunction from pain. We can then determine the best treatment strategies in order to correct these poor movement patterns which will then allow you to effectively and efficiently reach your health and wellness goals.

Step 2: Treatment and Rehabilitation

Once we establish the dysfunctional movement patterns, we will determine specific corrective strategies to target and fix the dysfunction which will allow you to get the results you are looking for. There are several corrective strategies we utilize in order to restore movement.

  • Chiropractic Adjustments. As chiropractors, we will always look at the spine. Chiropractic adjustments reduce pain, restore proper nerve function, and improve joint mobility. We can also adjust extremities including feet, ankles, hips, shoulders, and wrists if necessary.

  • Soft Tissue Therapy. We use several soft tissue therapies that treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerve, and fascia through active motion, directed pressure, and specificity of treatment that allows the practitioner to break up adhesions. Soft tissue therapy is effective in treating all soft tissue conditions whether they are chronic, acute, or post-surgical. Active Release Technique (ART) uses precise tension and very specific movement to ensure the smooth movement of tissue, to break up scar tissue, and the ability to restore function with minimal treatment time. Graston or instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is similar to ART but is a unique technique which involves the use of instruments to treat soft tissue restrictions. Cupping is a form of alternative medicine used to relieve neck and back pain, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, and migraines. Cupping can loosen muscles, increase blood flow, and is used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation and well-being through suction and pressure.

  • Kinesiology Taping. Therapeutic k-tape can benefit a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports injuries as well as inflammatory and lymphatic systems. It is specifically designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion which allows improvement to performance, increase blood flow, and prevent injury.

This comprehensive approach to movement is designed to help you move well and move often. Let us assist you in reaching your New Years Resolution goals!
